Q#1 I need help on good choices for snacks between my meals. What are some good choices?
Great question! Keep in mind that it is not the snacking that helps you to lose the weight, but the right food combinations. Here are some simple, inexpensive snack combinations I use that are not only low calorie, but healthy. My favorite is combining a medium sized apple with a 1 tablespoon of reduced fat peanut butter or nut butter; you can also prepare a large egg any way you like and eat with or on top of a slice of whole grain toast...and add a tomato slice instead of butter; grab a cup of boiled edamame with a little sea salt which is a snack all by itself; choose your favorite low fat or plain yogurt and mix in a tablespoon chia seeds; & though I am not a fan cottage cheese, it is an excellent snack when served with fresh fruits such as grapefruit, pears, strawberries, or oranges. Snacking does not follow the water rule which is you sip it all day whether you are thirsty or not, if you are not hungry...skip the snack and eat your main meal.
Q#2 Do you have any suggestions how I can get my 10 year old more active?
I could give you the easy advice of taking away all electronics, or to sign your child up for sports, or to buy more electronics like the Wii to encourage your child to move...but, if those worked childhood obesity would not be the growing epidemic it still is. I am going to give you the best advice as a fellow parent. Parent up & play with your child! Take them to a playground, to a pool, or even plan activities in your own backyard. Let them chose an activity they want to lead for you or for the entire family. Plan walks, or jogs, or even biking and allow your child to them chose the path for that day. This not only teaches leadership, it shows that fitness is fun. And most of all, you are setting the example of an active lifestyle for your child.
Q#3 I love avocados...is it okay to eat one a day?
Yes! Avocados are a great addition to your diet for moderate healthy fat! The fiber found in avocados helps promote healthy amounts of cholesterol, which is a tasty health bonus for you as it lowers the levels of bad cholesterol refereed to as LDL! So you can definitely enjoy eating one whole avocado a day knowing it is working for your health!Go green!
